An assessment score used to predict the neurological sequelae, referred to as Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE), of infants in the immediate neonatal period following perinatal asphyxia.

To calculate the Thompson score for Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE).

Used to calculate Thompson score for Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE). The score assesses nine neurological signs: tone, loss of conciousness, fits (clinically apparent seizures), posture, moro reflex, palmar grasp, suck reflex, respiration pattern and fontanelle tension. Each parameter's value is added and the total score is interpreted as Normal (0), HIE Mild Severity (1-10), HIE Moderate Severity (11-14) and HIE Severe (>=15). It can be particularly useful in healthcare settings that lack the technology to evaluate cerebral damage accurately like a computed tomography (CT) scanning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cerebral function monitoring, cranial ultrasound and doppler ultrasound of the middle cerebral artery.

Not to be used instead of the Apgar score. Not to be used in infants older than 4 weeks (neonatal period). Not to be used in replacement of neuroimaging when it is available.
