Rapid_Score v.0

The RAPID Score is used to assess the risk levels in the patients with pleural infection. It is based on five attributes, namely, Serum Urea, Age, Purulence of the pleuritic fluid, Infection source and Serum albumin. Each attribute is given points from 0 to 2. This is one of the useful factor in determining the treatment regime in such cases.

This is used for assessing the risk level in patients with confirmed pleural infection.

The RAPID Score is based on five attributes. Each attribute is graded from 0 to 2. The total score is obtained by adding up the points of all five attributes. Attributes 0 1 2 Serum urea <5mmol/l or <14mg/dl 5-8 mmol/l or 14-23 mg/dl >8 mmol/l or > 23 mg/dl Age < 50 yrs 50-70 yrs > 70 yrs Purulence Yes No Infection source Community acquired Hospital acquired Serum albumin >= 27 g/l < 27 g/l The following assessments are made; Risk level assessments: Total score 0 - 2 - Low risk 3 - 4 - Medium risk 5 - 7 - High Risk 3-month mortality (%) Total Score 0 - 2 - 1.5% 3 - 4 - 17.8% 5 - 7 - 47.8%

Shall not be used in cases where bacterial pleural infection is not confirmed.
