IBW v.1

Ideal Body Weight (IBW) can be calculated in many ways and for varying purposes. This guideline relates to the Devine formula for calculating IBW as would be needed in order to assess medication doses appropriately and in cases when actual body weight must not be used. It is calculated from the height and weight with separate formulas for men and women.

To calculate the ideal body weight of men and women.

Use to calculate the ideal body weight of individuals in order to prescribe adequate dosages of medication. There are multiple formulas/methods for calculating ideal body weight. The most widely used method is the Devine formula: ▪ Ideal Body Weight (men) = [50kg + 2.3kg * ( Height(in) - 60 inches )] ▪ Ideal Body Weight (women) = [45.5kg + 2.3kg *( Height(in) - 60 inches )] The formula generates an approximate value that can be used for individuals with a height of 5 feet or taller. The model supports use of inches as well as centimeters for input.

Should not be used to determine medication dosages in cases where the ABW (actual body weight) is needed. Do not calculate IBW for individuals under 5 feet tall.
